Identity Verification
Verify renter identities with government-issued ID via Stripe Identity.
Category: Bookings & Rentals
Overview
Identity Verification uses Stripe Identity to confirm a renter's government-issued ID before they pick up equipment. This reduces fraud and gives you legal recourse in case of damage or theft.
Sending a verification request
From the booking's Task Checklist: Click Send Identity Link next to the Identity Verified step. The renter receives an email with a link to Stripe's identity verification flow. They upload a photo of their government ID (passport, driver's licence) and a selfie. Stripe returns a pass/fail result in seconds. The booking checklist updates to show the verification status.
Verification statuses
| Status | Meaning | |--------|---------| | Not sent | Request hasn't been sent yet | | Pending | Renter has started but not completed | | Verified | ID confirmed ✓ | | Failed | Could not verify — follow up manually |
FAQ
Q: Is identity verification mandatory?
A: It's optional per booking. You decide when to require it — for example, on high-value equipment rentals.
Q: Does Stripe store the ID photos?
A: Stripe handles all ID data under their Privacy Policy and PCI compliance. OutdoorShare only receives the verification result (pass/fail), not the ID images.
Q: What if verification fails?
A: You can still proceed manually — contact the renter to verify in person before handing over equipment.
